Information literacy is defined as the ability to know when there is a need for information and to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand. Below is a break down of the nine steps how how a student processes information and uses it.
Accesses
The student who is information literate can accesses information efficiently and effectively. That student recognizes the need for information. Recognizes that accurate and comprehensive information is the basis for intelligent decision making. The student formulates questions based on information needs and identifies a variety of potential sources of information. The student develops and uses successful strategies for locating information.
Evaluates
The student who is information literate evaluates information critically and competently. The student determines accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness. He/she distinguishes among fact, point of view, and opinion. The student identifies inaccurate and misleading information and selects information appropriate to the problem or question at hand.
Uses
The student who is information literate uses information accurately and creatively. He/she organizes information for practical application. The student integrates new information into one’s own knowledge and applies information in critical thinking and problem solving. The student produces and communicates information and ideas in appropriate.
Independent Learner
The student who is an independent learner is information literate and pursues information related to personal interests. That student seeks information information related to various dimensions of personal well-being, such as career interests, community involvement, health matters, and recreational pursuits. He/she design, develops and evaluates information products and solutions related to personal interests.
Appreciates
The student who is an independent learner is information literate and appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information. He/she is competent and self-motivated reader. The student derives meaning from information presented creatively in a variety of formats and develops creative products in a variety of formats.
Strives for Excellence
The student who is an independent learner is information literate and and strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation. He/she assesses the quality of the process and products of personal information seeking. The student devises strategies for revising, improving and updating self-generated knowledge.
Social Responsibility
The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society. He/she seeks information from diverse sources, contexts, disciplines, and cultures and respects the principle of equitable access to information.
Practices Ethical Behavior
The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology. He/she respects the principles of intellectual freedom and intellectual property rights. The student uses information technology responsibly.
Participates Effectively in Groups
The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information. The student shares knowledge and information with others and respects others’ ideas and backgrounds and acknowledges their contributions. He/she collaborates with others, both in person and through technologies, to identify information problems and to seek their solutions. The student will also collaborate with others, both in person and through technologies, to design, develop and evaluate information products and solutions.
